Meet our Single/Working Parents ERG as part of Diversity Month

Meet Angela Philips, Co-lead of the Single/Working Parents ERG!

Frontline Capability Coach

Didsbury, AB

To Celebrate Diversity Month this April, we are highlighting one of our newest Employee Resource Groups.

The Single/Working Parents Employee Resource Group aims to provide a safe space for single parents, working parents, and others facing unique parenting challenges. Through this network, they strive to foster connection and support among their members while promoting empathy and understanding within our organization.

Q. What does Celebrate Diversity Month mean to you?

Celebrating diversity to me means to take the time to learn about and appreciate people of different religions, cultures, ethnic groups, ages, and backgrounds. Understanding that all of us are unique in our own ways and each person deserves to be treated equally and with respect. I continually strive to increase my knowledge by attending DEI events, watching documentaries, attending cultural festivals, and travelling to different countries and immersing myself in their culture. I have found interacting with people from different cultures helps me view life from a different perspective.

Q. What made you join the Single-Working Parents ERG? What’s your favorite thing about working with this group of individuals at Western?

I joined the ERG to connect with, provide encouragement, and bring a voice to single/working parents. My own experience has helped me to understand the pressures and challenges that can come with it.

My favorite thing about working with this group is connecting with people that want to foster a sense of belonging in the workplace.

Q. If you could share one thing that the ERG is working on or something that the ERG has accomplished that you are most proud of, what would it be?

The Single/Working Parents ERG has been working on a Resource Toolkit. The goal of the toolkit is to provide single/working parents with the resources they need to succeed at work and home and help them feel supported and valued at Western. By providing these resources, we aim to foster an inclusive workplace culture that celebrates diversity within families and supports all of our team members.
