For organizations providing that kind of stability to people in vulnerable moments, an unexpected financial challenge can quickly put critical support at risk, which is why the Foundation was proud to provide a $6,000 Emergency Support Fund grant to Oxford House Society of BC, an Indigenous-led registered charity that operates peer-supported sober living homes in Kelowna, B.C.
Oxford House Society provides safe, structured and substance-free homes where people transitioning from addiction, homelessness, treatment or detox can support one another as they work toward long-term independent living. In Kelowna, residences such as Rise Sober Living and The Quigley House offer recovery-focused environments rooted in peer support, accountability and community.
The organization recently faced an urgent cash-flow crisis after a temporary loss of rental income left it behind on essential operating expenses, including rent, utilities, internet, property insurance and other costs needed to keep the home running safely.
The grant from Western Communities Foundation will help Oxford House stabilize operations, cover overdue costs and maintain uninterrupted recovery housing for residents who rely on safe, supportive housing as they rebuild their lives.
For residents, the support means more than keeping the lights on, it means having a safe place to keep moving forward. In one case, a resident has now reached eight months of continuous sobriety, a powerful example of what can happen when people have stability, structure and community behind them.
Western Communities Foundation launched the Emergency Support Fund in 2026 as part of its 25th anniversary, creating a $100,000 rapid-response fund to help eligible Canadian charities facing unexpected crises and urgent operational challenges.
Since 2001, Western Communities Foundation has granted more than $9 million back into local communities through programs that reflect Western’s long-standing commitment to creating safe places where people live, work and play.
