Beyond Coverage: How Western Empowers Resilient Communities

Canadian Environment Week is celebrated on the first week of June, serving as a crucial reminder of the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship. At Western, we recognize the vital role of resilience – ensuring our communities and customers are prepared to weather any storm.
Through robust emergency response initiatives, we remain committed to supporting those who rely on us in times of crisis.
In 2025, our dedication has been tested as we’ve responded to severe events across Canada, including the Ontario ice storm, flooding in British Columbia, and widespread wildfires. These challenges underscore the need for proactive measures that empower communities and safeguard lives.
Strengthening Preparedness and Response
To help communities stay safe and informed, Western has prioritized proactive education and engagement initiatives:
Empowering Individuals to Act

Futureproofing with Western Communities Foundation Grants
Through Western Communities Foundation, we are taking resilience one step further by providing Infrastructure Grants to help empower local projects to integrate sustainability and climate-adaptive infrastructure to withstand disasters and proactively respond to a changing environment.
Examples of Impactful Infrastructure Considerations:
- Improving local emergency shelters to aid in disaster relief
- Building community gardens for local food sovereignty and biodiversity
- Incorporating fire/drought-resistant landscaping features
- Establishing cooling and shade stations to combat extreme heat
- Promoting urban tree planting and green spaces for healthier environments
- Installing nature play features and sustainably sourced play equipment
The Western Communities Foundation also supports communities during critical times, providing emergency aid and supporting local organizations helping those affected by disasters through an Emergency Support Fund. This fund collects donations and delivers timely assistance to communities in need.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Resilience Together
Resilience is a shared responsibility; together, we can continue building strong, prepared communities. Western is committed to empowering individuals and organizations with the resources needed to withstand adversity.
This Canadian Environment Week, we encourage you to engage with your local community and take advantage of the support available through Western.
Let’s work together to create a future where resilience isn’t just a response – it’s embedded into our way of life.
