At Western Communities Foundation, we believe that investing in people is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen the communities we serve. That’s why we are proud to award 165 Inspirational Bursary Awards to graduating high school students across Canada this year, helping young people take the next step toward their post-secondary educational and career goals.
The Western Communities Foundation Inspirational Bursary Award recognizes students who have demonstrated resilience, determination, leadership, community involvement, and an unwavering commitment to building a brighter future. The Indigenous Inspirational Bursary reflects our commitment to reconciliation and to supporting Indigenous students and communities across Canada. Many recipients have overcome personal challenges, financial hardship, family obstacles, or other forms of adversity. Others have distinguished themselves through volunteerism, school spirit, community leadership, or acts of courage and compassion. Together, they represent the very best of their communities.
Each bursary is awarded to a graduating student who plans to pursue post-secondary education or training, whether through university, college, trades, military service, or other career pathways. In some cases, the award may also support students with special needs by helping fund equipment, training, or resources that improve their quality of life and support their continued growth and independence.
Behind each of the 165 bursaries is a unique story of perseverance and promise.
This year’s recipients include:
- Addysyn Gobeil of Winnipeg, Manitoba, an Indigenous Inspirational Bursary Award recipient who plans to study science at the University of Manitoba before pursuing medical school.
- Eden Simon of Neguac, New Brunswick, an Indigenous Inspirational Bursary Award recipient and young Mi’kmaw leader who successfully organized and led a major event within a French-speaking Acadian school, demonstrating leadership, initiative, and a commitment to bringing people together.
- Annika Johannesson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, recognized for her perseverance, resilience, and academic excellence.
- Caleigh Sherring of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, who is pursuing a degree in Law, Justice, and Society at Dalhousie University.
- Caylee Bickford of Hillsborough, New Brunswick, who is working toward a diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management at New Brunswick Community College.
- Corey Rousil of Pembroke, Ontario, who is working toward a future career in the Canadian Armed Forces.
- Paula Ardelean of High River, Alberta, who is continuing studies in History and Humanities with plans to earn a degree in Education.
- William James Dulude of Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick, who plans to pursue post-secondary training in the electrical trade after graduation.
“These bursaries are about more than financial support,” said the Michelle Mak, Director of Western Communities Foundation. “They are about recognizing extraordinary young people, encouraging them to continue pursuing their goals, and investing in the future leaders, changemakers, and community builders who will make a lasting difference in the places they call home.”
