Western Communities Foundation Supports BC Wildfire Relief
As a provincial state of emergency remains in effect in British Columbia and thousands of people are displaced by wildfires, local Western Financial Group teams are helping get practical support to communities across the Okanagan and Interior.
Local Western teams are helping with practical supplies for families, evacuees and animals affected by the wildfires. Through Western Communities Foundation, Western is supporting two organizations doing immediate relief work in impacted communities: the Mamas for Mamas Fire Relief Support Fund and the BC SPCA Animal Emergency Fund. Mamas for Mamas is a national charitable organization based in B.C. supporting mothers, caregivers, and families in crisis, including those facing poverty-related struggles. Western was able to purchase backpacks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, underwear, pyjamas, snacks, feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, razors and other essential items to support families with back-to-school supplies, toiletries and everyday needs. The BC SPCA Animal Emergency Fund helps animals impacted by emergencies, and essential supplies are urgently needed to support horses and farm animals in affected areas, including feed tubs, fly spray, hoof picks, horse brushes, halters and lead ropes. The Foundation is directing another $2,500 to each organization to help families access basic needs and support animals affected.
“Our people live in these communities, and some of them are under evacuation order right now,” said Grant Ostir, CEO of Western Financial Group and President of Western Communities Foundation. “This is a small contribution against a very large problem, but it goes to two organizations doing immediate, practical work helping families cover basic needs and looking after the animals that come with them.”
As Western Communities Foundation marks 25 years of giving back, responding in moments like this reinforces why its work continues to matter and reflects its long-standing commitment to creating safe places and helping communities across Canada respond to evolving local needs.
Since 2001, Western Communities Foundation has granted more than $9 million back into communities across Canada through programs that support local infrastructure, students, employee giving, and community resilience. As wildfires, floods and other emergencies continue to affect communities, the Foundation’s focus remains clear: helping protect and strengthen the places people count on.
