Schomberg is a village of over 3,400 residents in York Region, about an hour northwest of Toronto. It’s nestled in the hills of King Township and to the village’s north are the farms of New Tecumseth and Holland Marsh, a major vegetable growing area in Ontario.
It has over 135 businesses and it’s also a hub for the agricultural community in King Township and its neighboring communities. It’s also strategic location, at the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 9, to transportation routes to Southern Ontario.
Schomberg was originally called Brownsville, named after the Brown family of four brothers who came from Pennsylvania and settled here in the 1830s. The brothers were responsible for establishing the first mill and the first bank in the area. In 1851, Brownsville had 135 inhabitants and a grist mill, a sawmill, a tannery, a two-room schoolhouse, and a church that welcomed all faiths.
In 1862 when the local post office opened, Brownsville had its name changed to Schomberg because there was already a Brownsville post office in York County. The name Schomberg was chosen to commemorate the Duke of Schomberg.
The Schomberg and Aurora railway operated from 1902 until 1927 and brought prosperity to Schomberg. The village has continued to grow at a modest pace over the years and has kept its country.
