Top 5 Things to Know About Renewing ICBC Car Insurance

Car Insurance for New Ontario Drivers

In B.C., it’s mandatory for all drivers to purchase car insurance through ICBC to ensure they are protected with a basic level of coverage. When you work with Western, your policy is still issued through ICBC, with guidance and support from a licensed broker. Learn more about ICBC Auto Insurance and how it works in British Columbia.

Here are 5 common questions answered about renewing your ICBC insurance:

  1. What is the Skip the Line Fast Path ICBC form?

The Skip the Line Fast Path ICBC form lets you renew your ICBC car insurance online, saving time during the renewal process. Your Western Financial Group insurance experts review and process your Fast Path submission to ensure everything is accurate.

ICBC online renewals are available for cars or trucks owned by a single owner.

If your vehicle is jointly owned, your Western insurance expert can help you renew your policy in person or over the phone.

  1. What if I don’t renew my ICBC insurance online?

You can still renew your ICBC insurance in person or by phone with a Western car insurance expert. A broker can review your coverage, apply eligible discounts, and make sure your policy reflects any changes.

  1. How can I pay for my ICBC renewal?

You can pay for your ICBC renewal using a major credit card, including Visa, Mastercard, or American Express.

You can also choose the ICBC Autoplan payment plan, which allows you to spread the cost of your insurance into monthly or quarterly payments. The plan offers low finance rates, equal instalments, and the flexibility to choose your preferred payment date.

  1. What is Basic Autoplan insurance for ICBC?

Basic Autoplan insurance is mandatory coverage required for all B.C. drivers as part of their ICBC auto insurance policy. It includes $200,000 in third-party liability coverage, which can apply in situations such as non-vehicle property damage or driving outside of British Columbia.

If you make a third-party liability claim against a driver who does not have enough insurance to cover your losses, Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) applies. Basic UMP covers you and eligible household members for claims of up to $1 million per insured person.

If you want additional protection, you may consider Extended Third Party Liability, an optional ICBC Autoplan coverage that can increase your liability limits up to $5 million.

  1. Can I get any discounts?

Ask your Western Financial Group insurance expert about available ICBC discounts, including:

  • Advanced Safety Technology discounts, such as vehicles equipped with autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
  • Experienced driver discounts
  • Low-kilometre and distance-based discounts (bring a photo of your current odometer reading at renewal)
  • Senior driver discounts
  • Disability-related discounts, where applicable

Even if you renew your ICBC insurance online, you must keep a printed copy of your insurance documents in your vehicle at all times.
