Top Tips to Balance Working Remotely

Working remotely can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with its challenges. It can lead to problems with setting boundaries, added career pressure, issues managing workloads, and more.

Whether or not you have adequate insurance coverage for working from home through your home insurance policy typically depends on your status as a remote worker, self-employed individual, or home-based business owner. Homeowners or renters’ insurance policies typically do not provide enough coverage for home-based businesses.

Here are the most reported challenges that come with remote work:

  1. Working to much: Many managers feared COVID-19 pandemic and several studies, now we know the opposite tends to be the reality. When you work and live under the same roof, it’s harder to switch off, and the boundaries between work and life tend to blur.
  2. Time Management: One of the most significant challenges remote workers face is how to manage their time. Meetings online, requests from multiple sources, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with too much work, especially because managers lose visibility into team members’ workloads.
  3. Distractions: Interruptions from your family, pets, and/or a doorbell are personal life distractions you might need to deal with as a remote worker. But there are also many work-related distractions, with all the apps, tabs, and notifications on to not miss anything. All those email notifications, chat notifications, text messages, calls can take a good chunk of your productivity and sometimes there are tasks that can wait and they are not high-priority tasks but they distract you.
  4. Isolation: Remote workers can feel lonely due to a lack of human interaction, and this can have an impact on mental health. There are more scheduled communications with an agenda and there's less opportunity for spontaneous conversations and chit-chat or small talk.
  5. Communication Issues: Overload communication from multiple sources can cause stress, distraction and difficulty in prioritizing and processing information. Underload communication, on the other hand, can cause uncertainty, isolation, and lack of motivation. Effective communication load is critical for remote workers.
  6. Time zone differences: Some major challenges of working in different time zones include lack of real-time communication, collaboration at unexpected hours, and lack of team bonding due to no in-person meetings or interactions.
  7. Bad health habits: Working from home can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, as individuals may be less likely to move around, and exercise compared to when they are in an office setting.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of remote work:

  1. Set up a dedicated workspace: Create a designated area in your home where you can work without distractions. Make sure it's comfortable and has everything you need to be productive. This dedicated workspace will help you to disconnect and follow your work schedule.
  2. Establish a routine to avoid burnout and manage time efficiently: Stick to a regular schedule as much as possible. Set specific work hours and take breaks to avoid burnout. Critical time management skills are very important for remote workers but it’s also about strategies. Set up reminders to take breaks, start and end of the day. Prioritize your tasks, set low priority for time wasters tasks. Use time blocking for high priority tasks and schedule on your calendar. Delegate tasks, get to know the strengths and weaknesses of your coworkers and team up with them so you can get more done in less time with better results.
  3. Minimize distractions: Identify and eliminate distractions in your workspace. This could include noise, clutter, or personal tasks. Set up a kind of signal that lets others know when you're in focus mode. Turn off notifications (personal and work) when you are working on a high priority task.
  4. How to avoid isolation and stay connected: Use technology to stay in touch with your colleagues. Schedule regular check-ins via phone, video calls, or messaging apps to stay connected and collaborate effectively. Be more intentional about joining local groups or organizations.
  5. Communicate effectively: Keep your colleagues and managers informed about your progress and availability. Use email.
  6. Communication: You have to think a bit more about when to send messages to others on different time zones. You can also move your work around when needed, and you can hand off work to others who can finish it up during their day and get it back to you. Be mindful when scheduling meetings. Be flexible. Use project management tools.
  7. How to avoid bad health habits: Avoiding a sedentary lifestyle while working remotely is important for maintaining your health. Set a schedule and take breaks. Use a standing desk. Take walking breaks. Exercise regularly. Drink plenty of water. Use active seating like an exercise ball for example.

Make sure to tackle the challenges of working remotely and enjoy the benefits of saving time and money from commuting, have greater autonomy and location, schedule, and job flexibility.
