When an unexpected funding change put essential community services at risk, The Red Road Healing Society needed immediate support to keep serving the children, youth, adults, Elders and families who rely on its programs. Founded in 1997, the Indigenous-led not-for-profit organization provides low-barrier, culturally based support in Edmonton and surrounding communities, offering a trusted place for people to find connection, resources and help when they need it most. The organization primarily helps First Nations, Metis and Inuit people from all over Canada but welcomes all races and nations to participate in their programs and services.
Through the Western Communities Foundation Emergency Support Fund, the Foundation is providing a $10,000 grant to the organization to help cover essential operating costs, including rent, phone, internet and utilities. The short-term support will help stabilize day-to-day operations and give The Red Road Healing Society time to pursue new funding opportunities without immediately reducing programs, outreach or one-on-one services.
Each year, more than 14,000 people access The Red Road Healing Society’s programming, including family outreach, parenting supports, youth programs, cultural teachings, recovery supports, family violence prevention, advocacy and referrals. Many participants are navigating challenges such as poverty, housing instability, food insecurity, mental health concerns, addictions or involvement with child intervention or the justice system. The organization also helps connect people with housing, food, transportation, education and other community resources.
For families already facing crisis or uncertainty, even a short interruption in services can make it harder to access parenting support, cultural connection, advocacy, referrals or help meeting basic needs. Community partners would also feel the impact, as many organizations refer Indigenous families to The Red Road Healing Society because of its culturally based approach and established relationships in the community. Keeping these services available helps reduce barriers and ensures people can continue finding support close to home.
Western Communities Foundation is proud to support organizations that help create safer, stronger and more connected communities. This funding will help The Red Road Healing Society continue providing culturally based services in Edmonton while it works toward a sustainable path forward.
