What do I need to know about car insurance in Windsor, Ontario?
As a resident of Ontario, you are required to carry mandatory car insurance coverage that protects you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road.
Under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act of Ontario, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle without valid insurance.
There are four types of car insurance that are legally required in Ontario:
Third-Party Liability Coverage
You must have a minimum of $200,000 in third-party liability coverage as part of your mandatory car insurance. It is highly recommended to choose a higher limit. This coverage protects you if you are found legally responsible for injury, death, or property damage to others.
Statutory Accident Benefits Coverage
This coverage provides benefits if you are injured in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. It can include medical treatment, rehabilitation, attendant care, caregiver benefits, non-earner benefits, and income replacement. You can also choose optional upgrades to increase your coverage levels.
Direct Compensation – Property Damage (DCPD) Coverage
DCPD coverage pays for damage to your vehicle or its contents, as well as loss of use, when another driver is at fault. It is called “direct compensation” because you deal directly with your own insurance provider, even when someone else causes the accident.
This coverage applies when the accident occurs in Ontario, involves at least one other vehicle, and at least one of those vehicles is insured by an Ontario-licensed insurer.
Uninsured Automobile Coverage
This protects you and your family if you are injured or killed by a hit-and-run driver or an uninsured motorist. It also covers damage to your vehicle caused by an identified uninsured driver.
