What do I need to know about car insurance in Victoria, B.C?

It’s mandatory for all drivers to purchase car insurance from ICBC to help ensure that they are protected with a basic level of coverage.

Basic autoplan insurance for ICBC includes $200,000 in third-party liability coverage. Third-party liability helps protect you in cases such as non-vehicle property damage or driving out of province, and it can protect you in situations where the law permits the other driver to sue.

If you make a third-party liability claim against the person who's responsible for a car crash and they don't have enough insurance to pay for your claim, Underinsured Motorist Protection (UMP) covers you. Basic underinsured motorist protection covers you and members of your household for claims of up to $1 million per insured person.

If you want to increase the amount of coverage you have in the event, you're responsible for a crash, you may want to consider extended third-party liability coverage, an optional Autoplan coverage.

What do I need to know about home insurance in Victoria, B.C?

Home insurance isn't mandatory in British Columbia, but most banks or mortgage lenders will require you to purchase home insurance coverage if you have mortgage.

Home insurance helps you protect against:  Theft,  Fire, Third- party “slip and fall” accidents, Vandalism.

You may want to consider adding earthquake coverage to your home insurance policy to protect you should your home suffer catastrophic damage in an earthquake. Every earthquake insurance policy is different, but typically includes three types of earthquake coverage.

  • Dwelling coverage helps cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home.
  • Personal property coverage helps replace personal property like electronics and furniture.
  • Loss-of-use coverage helps cover additional living expenses if you must move out while your home is rebuilt or repaired.
