If you’re in Waterloo, you’ll notice that you can’t miss the Grand River, which runs through the city and is surrounded by trails and parks. You can enjoy Waterloo Park, known as the jewel of the city. It opened in 1893 and it’s the oldest park in the city.

Waterloo Park is known for Silver Lake, an artificial body of water created in 1816 after the damming of the Laurel Creek by Abraham Erb, a Mennonite from Pennsylvania who is often called the founder of Waterloo. Erb wanted to power a grist mill at the south end of the park.

When you move to Waterloo, you’ll often see old order Mennonites. You’ll notice their horses and buggies parked in neighbourhoods such as Laurelwood for shopping. Mennonites are also seen on King Street selling their products like maple syrup and summer sausage. Many businesses like Home Depot in Colonial Acres provide covered parking for the Mennonites’ buggies.
